Captain Richard Phillips muss als Kapitän des Containerschiffs MV Mærsk Alabama den Albtraum aller Seefahrer durchleiden, als er gemeinsam mit seiner Crew 2009 in die Gewalt somalischer Piraten gerät. Um seine Crew zu schützen, bietet er sich den Piraten als Geisel an. Gleichzeitig gelingt es Mitgliedern seiner Crew das Schiff maneuvrierunfähig zu machen und sich vor den Piraten zu verstecken. Als die Erstürmung des dahintreibenden Schiffes durch Spezialeinheiten droht, entsteht eine Pattsituation, die jederzeit in einem Blutbad münden kann. Captain Philips muss versuchen, gemeinsam mit dem somalischen Piraten-Anführer Muse einen Ausweg zu finden, der die Sicherheit seiner Männer ermöglicht. Dabei sind sie jedoch Kräften ausgeliefert, die jenseits ihres Einflusses liegen.
